AMDI USM OSS DAY a collaboration program between AMDI USM and Open Source Developer Club Malaysia (OSDC.my) Hotel Seri Malaysia, Kepala Batas, Pulau Pinang 23 December 2010 8.00 am 5.30 pm INTRODUCTION The existence of computer in human life has brought a lot facilities in each human life. Despite the existence of heavy computer security threats computer users from time to time, such as viruses, malware, software piracy and other matters related to security threats and costs often associated in the current issue of the computer. Among the solutions to these problems is to use Open Source Software (OSS). However, consumers still are not aware of OSS in the computer world. OSS is essentially a free software made for personal or business users for their computing needs. In addition, application developers or ordinary computer users can help to engage and contribute to improving the application process by volunteering. Although this software is supplied free of charge, the ability of this software is comparable to that paid software, sometimes even better. Indirectly, this will reduce the rate of software piracy which is already rampant. In addition, open source software also requires a low hardware requirements to operate. Efforts to use open source software is also getting attention from the government in which the government has organized the MSC Malaysia Open Source Conference 2010 (MOSC 2010) and Malaysian Government Open Source Software Conference (MyGOSSCON). On this awareness, AMDI USM OSS DAY are conducted with the collaboration of Open Source Development Club Malaysia (OSDC.my) to aware the people, especially to the students about open source software is freedom, secure and easy to use. MISSION To provide exposure and awareness of Open Source Software in general other than looking for successor application developers in the Open Source in Malaysia for the future. OBJECTIVES Focuses on Open Source Software to the students and the community to use in learning and everyday life. Encourage students and the community about the use of Open Source Software in the course of everyday computer use. Provide new skills in the field of computers to students and the community indirectly as add value to the students for their career in future. EVENT FORMAT AMDI USM OSS DAY will show a variety of interactive mix of activities that consistent with the objective to promote and bring awareness about Open Source Software in general. Some of the events to be held are: Seminar: 9 talks related to the awareness of Open Source will be held consisting of activists, consumers, application developers or experienced specialists who also come from the Open Source industry itself.
Demonstration: as with any conference, AMDI USM OSS DAY will be holding a demonstration open to visitors who present at the event square. The demonstration is consist by activists, community and society where will provide an opportunity for visitors to know and see more closely what is open source and proprietary technology. We also promote activities in the demonstration area to enliven the program. TARGET PARTICIPANT Students of Higher Education Institutions and equivalent - regarded as the best receiver in the new things that can attract their attention as well as encouraging them to introduce to other local computer users plus looking at career prospects in this field. School students - exposing them of educational opportunities until to the employment opportunities in related areas and reveal the ability of Open Source in the period ahead. Government agencies, staff from public servants and private - provide a broad exposure to officer or employee on the ability of Open Source as well as encourage them to make the overall implementation to their department or respective ministries. Community and Society - all open source communities and societies around the event area. Community and Environment - allows them aware of the existence of alternatives in computer software applications. BENEFITS TO PARTICIPANT expand knowledge and improve skills of innovation in open source software. one platform to participate and submit questions for a particular item or issue to the speakers, experts, and users of Open Source Software who present Meet new people and expand the network to the prospect, especially in the field of education.
